Lincoln & McKinley after Assassination Message

This is a really amazing piece that I'm glad to be able to share with you. This is a 1901 Pan-American Exposition postcard with a view of the machinery and transportation buildings. This card was used in Buffalo, NY the day After Teddy Roosevelt’s Inauguration.

The writing on the face says:
Seen Lincoln in 1865
Seen McKinley in 1901
Both after Assassination
John R. Bricks
What an amazing piece of history!

The Lewis Ocean Motor

This postcard shows a schematic for the “Lewis Ocean Motor”, which was powered by the waves of the ocean pumping water into a reservoir which then powered a motor. I did a Google search for "Lewis Ocean Motor" and had no results (besides this post). I wonder if this design was ever used.

What is 23 Skidoo?

It all started with NYC's Flatiron Building...

The phrase 23 skidoo (sometimes 23 skiddoo) first appeared before World War I and became popular in the roaring twenties.

Perhaps the most widely known source of the expression derives from the area around the triangular-shaped Flatiron Building at Madison Square in New York City.

The building is located on 23rd Street at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway, and due to the complex geography of the intersection winds swirl around the building.

In the Roaring Twenties groups of men would gather to watch women walking by have their skirts blown up, revealing ankles which were seldom seen in public at that time.

Local constables, breaking up these groups of men, were said to be "giving them the 23 Skidoo".
